Follow up appointment

The 1st Consultation lasts for 1hr to 1.5hrs. The consultation begins with a comprehensive discussion about the current illness, current medications, past medical history, family history, social & work history, other body systems history, dietary habits, and environmental factors. This holistic approach is based on the fundamental belief that in most instances, a person’s illness has various contributing factors. This discussion is then followed by a physical examination to gain deeper insight into the presenting illness. A diagnosis will then be discussed, followed by a prescription discussion. Thereafter, the doctor will prepare the medicines and bill them separately from the consultation fee.

A Follow up Consultation lasts for about 30mins to 45mins. These are important to track progress and make adjustments to or refill prescriptions as required. Where necessary, further examinations and tests will be conducted.

About Phytotherapy

Phytotherapy is a science-based medical system that uses plant-derived medication (herbal medicine) to treat and prevent disease. Our approach to illness is holistic and focused on treating the root cause of the illness. Treatments are therefore tailored to the individual patient and often include lifestyle and dietary modifications, together with herbal treatments to treat and prevent illness.

Phytotherapists undergo clinical training which qualifies them to examine a patient and make a diagnosis. Furthermore, Phytotherapists can refer a patient for further diagnostic tests such as blood tests and x-ray scans, or to a medical specialist when required.

A Phytotherapist is also trained to formulate and prepare herbal medicines, hence they can manufacture capsules, syrups and tinctures for internal use, as well as creams or ointments for topical use. Our aim is to treat the person, and not just the disease.

About Dr Maphaha

My name is Dr Sharon Maphaha, and I am a registered Phytotherapist. I hold a Bachelor of Complementary Medicine in Phytotherapy as well as a BSc degree in Complementary Health Sciences from the University of the Western Cape. I offer alternative and natural treatments for various chronic diseases, including pain of any origin.

My interest in treating pain developed when I was healed from an excruciating back pain that tormented me for over 3 years. It was natural treatments that gave me the permanent relief that I desired. When I regained my freedom of movement and ability to do the things that I want without worrying about the pain, I knew I wanted to help those that are struggling with pain.

My first encounter with herbal medicine was when I was young and sick with flu. My aunt boiled a herb from our yard and gave it to me for steam inhalation. I knew then that herbs are powerful.

Over the years I became very interested in learning more about herbs and other natural treatments and was inspired to pursue a degree in Phytotherapy in order to learn how healing can be achieved by using natural resources (i.e., herbs, sunlight, water, food, etc.).

As a holistic practitioner, I further studied energy healing (reiki) in order to be able to help my patients when the root cause of the illness is not of a physical nature. The practice of reiki helps the patient to release the emotions that are causing the physical illness. Therefore, I also offer reiki treatments.

A tincture is a liquid herbal extraction that is prepared using an alcohol & water solvent in specific ratios in order to extract the desired constituents from the herb. The alcohol aids with the extraction of both water soluble and non-water-soluble constituents while also acting as a preservative.

Yes. The alcohol in the tincture can be evaporated by pouring hot water to the tincture and letting it stand for a few minutes. This process does not destroy the constituents in the tincture, so the tincture will still be effective.

Some constituents that are found in the herbs are water soluble and will be easily extracted in tea form. However, some constituents are fat soluble/oil soluble and will therefore require an alcoholic medium for extraction from the dry or fresh herbs.

Yes. Some constituents are temperature-sensitive; hence some teas are prepared using room-temperature water while the majority of teas require hot water for the extraction of constituents.
